About DragonFate

Here be Dragons, the Dragonfire Companion and guide to the paranormal romance series by Deborah CookeI’ve been sketching out my plans for DragonFate and thought you might like an update. I’ve had this series mapped out in my imagination for years, and it’s fun to be finally working on it. I’m making notes and sketches, and have begun to write some of the early schemes. Once the groundwork is done, the rest of the writing should proceed quite quickly. A big part of what’s been going on this year has been getting all of Dragonfire back into my head. I’ve been going through the books in that series and making notes, then filling out the records for Here Be Dragons: The Dragonfire Companion. I’ve also been compiling family trees for the Pyr.

As this series has taken shape, I’ve realized that it’s going to be a shorter and more tightly linked series of books. Each book will include a firestorm and a primary romance, but there will be more overlapping threads and ongoing stories that continue from book to book. Because of that, I know you’ll want to be able to go from one to the next fairly quickly. So, I’ve put off the publication date for book one, in order to have most or all of the books written before publication begins. I’m hoping to launch in the summer of 2019, and might enroll the series in Kindle Unlimited for 90 days before going into wide distribution. In the meantime, I’m going to share some of those early scenes with you.

Coastal Magic Reader Conference 2019On the 23rd, you’ll be able to read the first of those early scenes. It’s appearing as a guest post and short story on another blog (promoting the authors attending Coastal Magic 2019 – which includes me!) so stop back here for a link on the 23rd.

I’ll share a second scene with you in November, right here on the blog.

Flying Blind, book #1 of the Dragon Diaries series of paranormal YA novels by Deborah CookeZoë is the Wyvern of the Pyr—the one female dragon shape shifter with special powers.  But Zoë is at the bottom of the class when it comes to being Pyr, and her powers are AWOL. Worse, there’s no reference book to consult, and the last Wyvern is dead….

Everything changes when Zoë’s best friend is bullied and Zoë reacts. Before she can blink twice, her inner dragon is loose, and she’s suspended from school and headed to a shape shifter boot camp with guys she’s known all her life. But soon she’s doubting her powers—and even some of her friendships.

Zoë quickly realizes she has to master her powers yesterday—there’s danger ahead and boot camp is a trap. A secretive group, the Mages, want to eliminate all shifters and the Pyr are next in line—unless Zoë and her friends can solve the riddle and work together to save their own kind…

“Zoe is a wonderful heroine–smart, strong and sympathetic. Bring on book two!”

Winging It, book #2 of the Dragon Diaries YA trilogy by Deborah CookeZoë Sorensson yearns to come into her powers as the only female dragon shifter. But being part of two worlds is more complicated than she expected. It’s bad enough that she’s the target of the Mages’ plan to eliminate all shifters—she also has to hide her true nature from her best friend Meagan, a human. For her sixteenth birthday, all Zoë wants is one normal day, including a tattoo and a chance to see hot rocker Jared.

Instead, the Pyr throw her a birthday party but ban Meagan from attendance, putting Zoë in a tight spot. Things get even worse when Zoë is invited to the popular kids’ Halloween party and Meagan’s left out. Zoë knows the party is a trap laid by the host, an apprentice Mage. When Meagan gets a last-minute invite, Zoë must save the day—and her best friend—without revealing her fire-breathing secrets…

Blazing the Trail, #3 of the Dragon Diaries YA trilogy by Deborah CookeIt’s almost Valentine’s Day, and Zoë Sorensson’s love life is heating up. Cute, loyal, and understanding, wolf shifter Derek is pretty much the perfect guy. He likes Zoë, and he knows what it’s like to have to keep a secret. Yet, Zoë can’t help but wish it was rebel rocker Jared asking her to the Valentine’s dance instead. But Jared’s too busy playing hot and cold with her heart, calling Zoë his dragon girl one minute and then taking special interest in her best friend the next.

Zoë is just about ready to breathe fire, especially once she uncovers a new threat that targets her friends. Although Zoë thought the Mages were defeated, they’re back and have invoked an old spell to give them new power—they plan to eliminate all shape shifters on the night of the big dance. Now, Zoë must lead an alliance of young shifters to battle the Mages and figure out exactly what—and who—she wants, before it all goes up in smoke…

“I have been a huge fan of Deborah Cooke for many years. When a new release comes across my path, I truly do a happy dance. Cooke has lived up to her previous work with BLAZING THE TRAIL. I loved how Zoe deals with the everyday issues in front of her while trying to save the world with the Pyr and fellow shifters.”—Fresh Fiction

New Dragon Diaries Covers

The Dragon Diaries is a young adult paranormal trilogy, featuring the coming-of-age of Zoë Sorensson, a dragon shifter and the new Wyvern of the Pyr. The trilogy should be read in order. Zoë’s story can be read after Dragonfire (when it occurs in real time) or after Darkfire Kiss (when I wrote it).

The Dragon Diaries have shiny new covers for their new editions, coming September 25, 2018. Pre-orders are available at some portals, with more to come.Flying Blind, book #1 of the Dragon Diaries series of paranormal YA novels by Deborah Cooke Winging It, book #2 of the Dragon Diaries YA trilogy by Deborah Cooke Blazing the Trail, #3 of the Dragon Diaries YA trilogy by Deborah Cooke

The Allison & Busby Commonwealth English editions of the first two books remain available in both print and digital, exclusively in the exclusive territories and non-exclusively in the non-exclusive territories. (What does that mean? The UK is an exclusive territory, therefore only the A&B editions are available there. Canada is a non-exclusive territory, therefore both the A&B editions and my new editions are available there.) The A&B editions look like this:

Flying Blind, first of the paranormal young adult Dragon Diaries trilogy by Deborah Cooke, UK edition Winging It, second of the paranormal YA trilogy The Dragon Diaries by Deborah Cooke, UK edition

Since A&B didn’t acquire the rights to Flying Blind, the new edition of that book will be available everywhere.

One man’s mission ignites one woman’s fire…

Niall Talbot has volunteered to hunt down and destroy all the remaining shadow dragons – who were weakened by the destruction of the Dragon’s Blood Elixir – before they can wreak more havoc. Among them is his dead twin brother, making Niall’s mission not only dangerous but personal.

Tattoo artist Rox believes the world is a canvas to be made more beautiful. An unconventional spirit who isn’t afraid of anything, she doesn’t even flinch when a shape-shifting dragon warrior suddenly appears on her doorstep. And as a woman who follows her heart in matters of passion, she makes the perfect mate for a firestorm with Niall…

“WHISPER KISS by Deborah Cooke is now my unofficial official favorite! Rox’s quirky characteristics and beauty and Niall’s no nonsense outlook on life as well as his dedication just drew me into this wonderful but often dangerous world of the Pyr and I loved every single scene. Bursting with emotions, passion, and even a real fire or four, I count myself lucky not to have spontaneously combusted! Don’t miss this sizzling addition to Deborah Cooke’s DRAGONFIRE series – it is marvelous!”—Romance Junkies

Kiss of Fire HardCover Edition

Ta DA! Here’s the hardcover collectors’ edition of Kiss of Fire:

Kiss of Fire, the first book in the Dragonfire series of paranormal romances by Deborah Cooke, in a hardcover collectors' editionThe front and back cover on the dust jacket are the same as the cover for the trade paperback, but (of course) there are flaps on it as well. The book itself is bound in blue cloth, with the title and my name in foil on the spine. The interior is the same as the trade paperback, too. Here’s a peek of the dragons in the drop caps at the start of each chapter – you can see a bit of the blue cloth, too: Kiss of Fire, the first book in the Dragonfire series of paranormal romances by Deborah Cooke, in a hardcover collectors' edition

I’m making the entire series available in hardcover collectors’ editions. The trim size on the book interior is the same as the trade paperback, but if you mix and mingle, they won’t quite line up on your shelf – the hardcover case is a little bit bigger so the hardcover is 1/4″ taller and wider than the trade paperback. It’s also a bit thicker, again because of the hardcover case.

The list price on this edition of Kiss of Fire is $29.99US – the price will vary, depending on the length of the book. Kiss of Fury is longer, for example, and Firestorm Forever is much longer.

You can pre-order the Kiss of Fire collectors’ edition at Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

You can also buy it directly from me. Your copy will be signed – and you’ll also get the ebook edition. If you pre-order from me, you’ll get free shipping to the US and Canada.

Kiss of Fire Trade Paperback

Here are copies of the new trade paperback edition of Kiss of Fire.

Kiss of Fire, book #1 of the Dragonfire series of paranormal romances by Deborah Cooke, in its new trade paperback editionYou can pre-order a copy at Amazon or Barnes & Noble. It will also be available at other booksellers. The list price is $13.99 US although it may be discounted by the portals.

There will also be a trade paperback edition published through Amazon which will be a little bit cheaper – the list price is $9.99 US – although it won’t be available in all territories. (It’s cheaper because it’s only available at Amazon and only in certain Amazon territories.) If you’re in the US and you shop at Amazon, you might want to wait for that one. There’s no option for pre-order on that version, so it will go live on the on-sale date of June 26.

Later this week, I’ll show you the hardcover edition. 🙂

Picking Nits

I’m proofreading the new Dragonfire editions in print as well as digital. It’s amazing how much easier it is for me to proofread in print rather than digital. I’m finding so many little fussy fixes!

Look at the notes on this proof copy of Kiss of Fire:

proofed copy of Kiss of Fire, a Dragonfire novel by Deborah Cooke

A lot of these are very, very minor – there are a number of straight quotes that should be curly ones, for example. These book files were scanned because I didn’t have them in digital format, so there are silly things like missing periods or commas that were read as periods in OCR. I found one instance of Pyr that wasn’t italicized. Before printing the proof copy, this book was corrected in digital format by me, then proofread by my very excellent proofreader – yet there were still nits to pick. I’m also making a few small editorial changes at this point—well, maybe more than a few. No proofreader could have anticipated those.

It’s time-consuming, for sure, but the end result will be a book as close to perfect as I can make it. That pleases me a great deal. 🙂

Once I’ve updated and uploaded the final files for Quinn and Sara’s book, Kiss of Fury will get the same treatment.
