2020 in Review

There have been a lot of graphics in my feed on Facebook of authors sharing the books they published in 2020. It’s inspiring to see everyone’s accomplishments, so I did a graphic of my own.

Deborah Cooke's 2020 book releases

Pearl Beyond Price is a teensy bit of a cheat, as it was published in the last week of 2019. (I felt badly that “Claire” had no new releases in 2020.) I published the All’s Fair boxed set, but it was composed of previously published content, which doesn’t count for this graphic.

Claire also had new translations published in 2020, including The Beauty Bride in Portuguese and German, The Rose Red Bride and The Snow White Bride in Italian, and The Ballad of Rosamunde in Portuguese. I have the Spanish translation of The Crusader’s Bride but it won’t appear in stores until 2021. Claire also had a new audiobook, The Mercenary’s Bride, recorded by Tim Campbell.

The first two books shown here, Pearl Beyond Price and Just One Fake Date, were revisions and rewrites. I’ve learned that these take me longer than just writing a new book, so won’t be rushing to do any more of them. (Even though I have more Claire Delacroix books from Harlequin Historicals, they all need that kind of revision. I’m going to leave them alone for the time being.)

Another project that consumed a lot of time was repackaging books. I repackaged The Champions of St. Euphemia series, as well as Flatiron Five Fitness and Flatiron Five Tattoo. I’ll take a break from that job in 2021, too!

The obvious question is: What’s coming in 2021?

When I was traditionally published, the schedule was made a year in advance of publication and books were delivered, formatted, etc., about six months before publication. I’m trying to get back to that place without leaving too many gaps in my schedule. It’ll take me a couple of years, but I’m making progress. The big challenge with publishing is that I like to alternate between sub-genres and worlds. I think it’s necessary to my creative process, so that means that the publication of series will stretch out over time.

So far in 2021, I have two historical romances scheduled for publication, The Wolf & the Witch and One Knight’s Desire. I have two books scheduled for audiobook production: The Wolf & the Witch and The Runaway Bride. Both will be recorded by Tim Campbell. I already have a number of translations scheduled for delivery and publication in 2021: The Rose Red Bride in German, The Rose Red Bride and The Snow White Bride in Portuguese, The Ballad of Rosamunde and The Renegade’s Heart in Italian, and The Crusader’s Bride in German, too. The rest of the Champions of St. Euphemia series will be translated into Spanish, too. (As mentioned above, The Crusader’s Bride in Spanish is being published now.) Many of these translation teams will continue the series with the next book after they deliver the one currently in the works. Claire has a new boxed set coming in February, Stolen Brides, and will have a second boxed set published some time during the summer.

For my contemporary romances, Just One Silver Fox is scheduled already for 2021. I plan to publish Annika and Thom’s story—which is becoming longer than I’d initially expected, no surprise to any of you in that!—but won’t set a publication date for that until it’s done. I have another secret Flatiron Five project in the works, but it’s too soon to talk about that. 🙂 Of course, there’s the F5F spin-off series in Harte’s Harbor, too, but I’d like to be able to schedule the first three on a fairly rapid release, with the books being done. Ha. I’m thinking that series will likely be a 2022 launch.

Wyvern's Wizard, book #11 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah Cooke

For my paranormal romances, there’s nothing officially booked at this time. I’m hoping to publish the next DragonFate novel, possibly next summer, and am working on the next Incendium story, Wyvern’s Wizard. (The issue with Wyvern’s Wizard is that I suspect four princesses are going to weigh in and entangle their storylines with Peri’s, so it’s not a case of getting one book written—it’s a case of getting four books written.) I’m still having various characters weigh in about their story needing to be told next. Once The Wolf & the Witch is done, I’ll make a decision and dive in.

In the meantime, there are promotions to schedule and all the rest of the jobs that come with indie-publishing. I’m hoping to have a very productive 2021, and this is my plan at the moment. I have the spreadsheets to show for it!

Maeve’s Book of Beasts is FREE!

Maeve’s Book of Beasts, is a prequel to DragonFate that introduces both Maeve’s evil plan to eliminate paranormal species from the world (including the Pyr) and the cast of characters assembling to defeat her. In it, you’ll meet Sebastian, a vampire who has escaped Maeve and is building the team to destroy her, and Sylvia, the mortal librarian he chooses to hide the ancient volume stolen from Maeve. Sebastian gets more than he expects from Sylvia—never mind that Maeve wants her book back—and Sebastian’s romance with Sylvia will arc over the entire series.

Maeve's Book of Beasts, book 1 of the DragonFate series of paranormal romances by Deborah Cooke

Careful what you wish for…
A mysterious book given to Sylvia by a handsome stranger plunges her into a hidden world, awakening her ability to see a paranormal realm and the Others who live in it. It also makes her a target for the Dark Fae who want the book back—and who will kill her to reclaim it. The stranger, Sebastian, becomes Sylvia’s reluctant defender—but his ability to influence her dreams is almost as dangerous as the fact that he’s a vampire. On the run with Sebastian, Sylvia learns about the plan of Maeve, Queen of the Dark Fae, to eliminate all other paranormal creatures. Possession of the book means that Sylvia is caught in the middle of a war between the Dark Fae and the Others, with a predator as her only ally. If she can decipher the book, will that help the Others to fight for their survival? Should she trust Sebastian? Or does the vampire who ignores all the rules have a secret plan of his own?

New Review for Dragon’s Mate

Dragon's Mate, book four of the DragonFate novels, a series of paranormal romances by Deborah Cooke

There’s a wonderful new review for Dragon’s Mate posted at The Reading Cafe! Here’s a taste: “The detailed premise is heart breaking, engrossing, dramatic and intense; the characters are numerous, energetic, and impassioned; the romance is seductive and edgy.”

Who’s Next?

You probably noticed that there isn’t a pre-order set up for the next DragonFate novel, or even a cover for you to check out. That’s because I’m not sure whose story will be next. There are several possibilities.

I had thought that Alasdair would be next – it’s time for him to be healed enough for his firestorm, and I like Yasmina – but then Wynter showed up at Bones. The energy between Wynter and Arach is interesting, and I like the idea of writing about wolf shifters with attitude. They might jump queue.

On the other hand, things are intriguing between Sebastian and Sylvia. I’ve left them in an interesting place but want to know more. Is it time to step away from the dragons to explore a little vampire romance?

Wyvern's Wizard, book #11 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah Cooke

Another contender is the romance of Theo and Mel, with the love triangle of Raymond. Theo and Mel have been in the background so far, and this is the story I was most intrigued about writing when I began this series. Hmm.

In the meantime, now that the magick has gone back to Regalia, it’s a good opportunity to return to its sister planet of Incendium. Oh, and the next hero there is Nero, an aspiring wizard. What a perfect coincidence! Look for Wyvern’s Wizard next, probably in the summer. I won’t put up a pre-order for this one until the book is done. I need a little break from deadlines right now.

Dragon’s Mate

Today’s the day for Dragon’s Mate, Hadrian and Rania’s story!

Dragon's Mate, book 4 of the DragonFate series of paranormal romances by Deborah Cooke

Her kiss will shatter realms…

Dragon shifter and artisan blacksmith Hadrian is determined to strengthen his fellow Pyr warriors in the battle against the Fae by forging them talons of steel. He won’t be seduced by the sensual promise of a firestorm that has to be a spell—even to help a beautiful warrior escape the clutches of the Fae Queen.

Rania is a swan-maiden and Fae assassin, who has made a deal with the Dark Queen’s will to break the curse over her brothers. All she needs to do is kill Hadrian, but this dragon shifter won’t die easily. It’s more than dragon vitality that helps him survive her lethal kiss, but Rania refuses surrender to his potent touch for any price when so much hangs in the balance.

But the Dark Queen’s betrayal compels Rania to ally with the vital dragon shifter in a last-chance effort to save her brothers and herself. Can Hadrian unfurl the painful secrets of Rania’s past to give them a future? Can Rania help Hadrian to realize the power of his own legacy to defeat the Fae? When barriers between realms are destroyed, can love conquer the obstacles between these destined mates—and create a new world for their unborn son?

An excerpt from Dragon’s Mate:

“What’s your name, swan-maiden?” Hadrian whispered, his voice husky. “You have to know that we’re both on her list of intended victims.”

“Speak for yourself,” Rania said, pulling back a bit. She was alarmed that she was so susceptible to him and this firestorm.

He frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I don’t have to tell you anything more. I’ve told you too much already.”

Hadrian smiled crookedly at her and the sight was enough to make her stare. Had she ever seen a more attractive man? “It’s like you want to talk,” he murmured. Before she could argue, he flattened his hand and slid his palm down the length of her, the warm weight of his hand easing beneath the waistband of her tights. Rania knew his destination and couldn’t bring herself to evade his caress. He met her gaze, waiting and watching, but she swallowed and stayed put.

Just one touch.

Then she’d finish him.

When Hadrian caressed her, Rania knew she’d never felt anything better. She arched her back and gasped. He stole a kiss and she was unwilling to deny herself the pleasure he offered. His fingers were gentle and strong, just like him, and he touched her with a surety that brought her blood to a boil.

Just a little bit more. Just a little indulgence…

“You have told me a lot,” he agreed in a whisper, his lips against her ear. Rania shivered with pleasure. “Maybe you need to confess your secrets.”

“Or maybe I’m beguiled.” The possibility was a reminder that made Rania pull away slightly.

Hadrian shook his head emphatically. “I’m not beguiling you.”

“As if I would believe you.”

“You should. It’s true. There would be flames in my eyes if I was beguiling.”

Rania looked. There were no flames. Was he telling the truth?

He nodded as if he’d guessed her thoughts. “I am. What if we make a deal?” he suggested, his gaze hot. “What if we satisfy the firestorm before you kill me? I’ll make it worth your while.”

Rania stared at him in astonishment. “You want me to have your son?”

Hadrian nodded, resolute. “You’re making thirteen assassinations to free your brothers. Although I don’t love your choice, I can respect your loyalty to your family. I think we have similar ideas about defending what’s important.”

“And what’s important to you is the firestorm?”

“Right.” He grinned at her. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to have a son. How could I turn my back on that? It’s a legacy.”

“Nothing says you have to fulfill it.”

“But I should. It’s an obligation and an opportunity.”

“It doesn’t sound like much of an opportunity to me.”

“But what if we made that deal? What if we surrendered to the firestorm, and then I made it easy for you to kill me?”

Rania couldn’t believe it but Hadrian was serious.

“You’d let your assassin have your son?”

He chuckled. “I’d let my destined mate have my son.”

Rania opened her mouth to argue but Hadrian captured her mouth with his, slowly and decisively, and she forgot whatever she was going to say. He was going to win his argument with sensation and she couldn’t think of a reason to protest. She already guessed that it would be great. There was something deeply satisfying about his obvious desire. It made her aware of every pleasure she’d denied herself during these centuries in Maeve’s service.

It made her consider his suggestion.

Even, potentially, at the price of bringing a Pyr son into the world.

“What do you know about the firestorm?” Hadrian whispered in her ear long moments later.

Rania was trying to catch her breath and gather her thoughts, without success on either front. “As much as I need to,” she replied. “I’m not going to have a Pyr son.”

Hadrian smiled with that dragon confidence that made her want to get naked with him. “I might convince you.”

“Good luck,” she replied, her heart leaping at the possibility.

“I like a challenge.” His lashes swept down and he smiled, the combination making him look mysterious and potent. “Maybe you’ll find me persuasive,” he said so softly that his words were a rumble she felt against her chest.

Maybe she would.

He bent and kissed her ear again, his fingers working their magic against her. His breath gave her shivers. His touch made her gasp. Rania didn’t know whether she’d be able to stop their embrace. She was pretty sure she didn’t want to. Her leg was already locking around his, as if her body had a will of its own, and she was breathless as she stared into his eyes. They were so green. His mouth was so firm. He was taking his time, tormenting her with temptation, willing her to agree.

Rania could have disappeared.

She could have shifted shape.

But being the woman Hadrian was determined to seduce suited her just fine.

What if she made love to him—or let him make love to her? It might be kind to let him satisfy the firestorm as his last living act.

Although kindness had never been on her agenda before.

She was hesitating again, doubting her path, which wasn’t like her at all. Maybe this firestorm was changing her somehow.

Maybe a certain dragon shifter was.

Hadrian brushed his mouth across hers again, a caress as gentle as the touch of butterfly wings, and Rania didn’t want to think about anything anymore.

Strategically, sex might lead to a weak moment, one in which she could easily overwhelm this powerful dragon shifter.

Nothing said they had to complete the act. She just needed to catch him by surprise.

When Hadrian leaned closer, eyes gleaming, she reached to meet him halfway. She sighed with satisfaction when he slanted his mouth over hers, claiming her with his touch, then speared her fingers into his hair, drawing him closer.

This might be his last hour. She should make sure it was worth dying for.
